This course provides a comprehensive introduction to hemodynamic monitoring in critically ill patients. There will be two blocks of presentations, each followed by skill stations designed to reinforce and elaborate on concepts introduced in the presentations. The morning block introduces basic principles of hemodynamics and shock management, the concepts of functional hemodynamic monitoring and assessment of fluid responsiveness and cardiovascular pharmacology. Skill stations focus on hemodynamic monitoring devices: noninvasive devices, invasive pulse volume devices, and pulmonary artery catheters, with an opportunity for interactive experience with the devices in simulation. The afternoon block addresses assessment of tissue perfusion, technical aspects of monitoring, and a fuller consideration of strengths and weaknesses of various invasive and noninvasive monitoring devices. The afternoon skill stations will present interactive cases in a “Choose Your Own Adventure” format. The course is structured to allow a great deal of interaction with faculty as well as the ability to tailor instruction to attendees’ particular areas of interest.
