Rationing of medical resources is unavoidable when needs surge and resources do not. This is especially true during mass causality events, disasters, pandemics, and drug shortages. Many interventions and medications used in the ICU are associated with high cost and therefore cannot be broadly provided for all patients. This session will facilitate discussion of ethical dilemmas surrounding rationing and principles to guide just and equitable allocation of resources and will develop a framework for resource allocation when such needs arise.
