The care of the patient with sepsis is complex and includes rapid recognition, timely antibiotic administration, hemodynamic resuscitation, and other forms of organ support such as invasive ventilation and renal replacement. In addition, numerous health systems and some jurisdictions mandate additional elements, such as lactate assessment. Data supporting these elements of care may be limited, however. In this lecture, we will review the evidence underlying specific components of sepsis care and which aspects should be prioritized as we work to decrease mortality.
