Catheter-associated infection is one of the leading causes of bacteremia and sepsis in ICUs in many countries. The multiple stresses of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to large increases in hospital staff workload around the world. Many patients have required long hospital stays, including extended ICU admissions. Many hospitals have lost ground in process improvement projects to reduce catheter-associated infections. This session will address how to get your ICU back on track and reestablish the collective mindfulness of patient safety. Evidence-based guidelines will be presented to help limited-resource ICUs reduce central line-associated bloodstream infections and catheter-associated urinary tract infections. Using strategies to reduce catheter placement and reestablishing multiprofessional rounding tools to address catheter necessity, tools and resources will be offered to rapidly gain control of catheter use, providing alternatives, guidelines for maintenance, and reduction of infection rates even in ICUs with high-acuity patients. Methods for sustaining new gains made will be demonstrated.
