Cardiac dysfunction plays a prominent role in the organ dysfunction of sepsis and is an area of increasing research and clinical interest. The variety and changing definition of septic cardiomyopathy will be discussed, as well as basic science, pathophysiology, and the implications of heart dysfunction in this setting. Novel imaging and diagnostic techniques will be demonstrated. Speakers will also address controversies surrounding terminology and discuss the epidemiology (incidence and risk factors) of cardiac dysfunction in sepsis with respect to different definitions (including serum biomarkers), as well as what is known about outcomes.
