The skin is often overlooked as an organ system. Both acute and chronic skin failure have significant impact on morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. This session will introduce the skin as an organ system that can fail, including presentations of acute and chronic skin failure in the emergency department and other hospital settings. Speakers will discuss how to assess the skin on daily ICU rounds and describe ways to prevent and manage common ICU skin disorders. Death by skin failure will be addressed, beginning with a literature-based outcomes review of skin failure outcomes. Humane approaches to end-of-life care for patients with skin failure will be promoted, including communication tactics for dealing with decision-makers.
