The pace of technological advance in critical care is astounding. A number of new and evolving technologies have been used to facilitate shock monitoring, some invasive, some using ultrasound, and others using new modalities. Yet, at times it seems that the use of these technologies supersedes a careful clinical examination and thoughtful use of biomarkers. This session is a pro/con debate about the role of multimodal monitoring, broadly construed as using any or all available technologies, compared with simpler and less expensive expedients, in the management of shock after the initial diagnosis.
