Dr. Jose Javier Provencio is the Louise Nerancy Professor in Neurology, the Medical Director of the Nerancy Neurological Intensive Care Unit and a translational researcher in the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia at the University of Virginia. He received his medical degree in 1993 from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and completed residencies in neurology and internal medicine, medical and neurological critical care at the University of Viriginia.
Nationally, Dr. Provencio is Co-Chair of the Neurocritical Care Research Central Grants Subcommittee, on the steering committee of the Curing Coma Campaign and the GCS NeuroCOVID research consortium. He is the Chair of the Neuroscience Section of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and serves on the organizing committee for the Multiprofessional Critical Care Review course.
Dr. Provencio is the Division Head of the Hospital Medicine Division of the Neurology department that includes the ICU and Hospitalist Neurologists. His laboratory studies the inflammatory underpinnings of acute brain injuries, and, with his collaborators, his lab investigates the role of meningeal neutrophils in the normal functioning of the brain.
He is married with three children and lives in Charlottesville, Virginia.
