J. Matthew Aldrich, MD is the Executive Medical Director for Critical Care Medicine and Clinical Professor of Anesthesia at UCSF. His clinical practice includes anesthesia and critical care. Within these fields, he has a particular interest in resuscitation training and practice and advanced respiratory failure. His academic interests are focused on quality improvement and harm reduction in critically ill patients. He was a member of the UCSF Critical Care Innovations Group, an interprofessional group of providers, staff, and patient/family advisors that worked to reduce preventable harms and improve patient/ family experience in the ICU. He also served as the campus PI for the UC-Wide Implementation of the Advanced Resuscitation Training (ART) Program. This five campus project was designed to improve the culture of safety at each medical center and improve resuscitation outcomes by developing a system of robust oversight and training. He has a special focus on the diagnosis and management of advanced respiratory failure and leads UCSF’s multidisciplinary approach to the care of these complex patients. This work includes triage and coordination of patient transfers from referring hospitals in Northern California. Since 2016, he has been the UCSF PI for a UC-wide study to explore the patient- and procedure-related risk factors and nursing care processes that are associated with developing postoperative respiratory failure.
He is actively involved in the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s (SCCM) ICU Liberation initiative. He served on the West Coast ICU Liberation Collaborative and was the inaugural Co-Chair of SCCM’s ICU Liberation Committee. He received SCCM’s Presidential Citation for my contributions.
