Keeping a patient off of mechanical ventilation is just as important as rapidly weaning them from mechanical ventilation. The presentation will direct ICU clinicians in an algorithmic approach to manage severe chest wall trauma in a cost effective process with improved outcomes. A tiered approach for multimodal pain control associated with the PIC score (pain, incentive spirometry, and cough ability) and potential need for operative fixation will be reviewed. Adjunctive measures and where they should be incorporated into a full algorithm for chest wall injury management for the best outcomes and reduced length of hospitalization.
