This session will focus on the management of influenza in the critically ill. In particular, the session will discuss how to manage influenza that has undergone antigenic drift or shift that has resulted in decreased, minimal, or no vaccine or natural immunity protection and subsequently resulted an epidemic or pandemic with a surge of critically ill patients. The session will discuss the basic science for why these changes occur, best practices and lessons learned from previous epidemics or pandemics, and evidence based and targeted approaches to containment and management of the viral infection. The session will also evaluate influenza viruses of interest that are considering emerging threats or to have pandemic potential in humans. Dr. Bulloch is considered a thought leader in the area of influenza and has presented numerous presentations nationwide on influenza and its management.
