The increasing number of obese patients requiring critical care represents a challenge for intensivists in the trauma ICU. Changes in pulmonary and hemodynamic physiology, pharmacologic drug distribution, physical therapy, nutrition, and unique issues for nursing care must all be considered. This session will tackle the major issues in managing morbidly obese patients in the trauma ICU, including mobilization, respiratory challenges, appropriate nutrition, and adjustment of medications to improve care and prevent complications, as well as tips and tricks for diagnostic and management dilemmas in extremely obese injured patients.
