From hepatic encephalopathy-related cerebral edema to severe meningitis, patients admitted to surgical and medical ICUs have significant neuropathology and are at risk of acute neurologic emergencies such as intracerebral hemorrhage, ischemic stroke, and seizure. This session will review the four most commonly used neuromonitoring devices—head CT, pupillometry/optic nerve sheath diameter, EEG, and external ventricular drains—in the ways in which they apply to general intensivists. The session will focus on high-yield, practical tips.
