Frequent challenges to in-person availability of decision-makers in the ICU include distance of family, cost of travel, and time off work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, alternative means of communication with surrogate decision-makers were essential to facilitate patient-centered care in the ICU. This session will cover alternative communication strategies that have been successful in facilitating patient-centered care and that can improve shared decision-making and facilitate inclusion when patients or surrogate-decision makers are faced with barriers to in-person communication.
